Chikungunya
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a viral infection that is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species. It belongs to the genus Alphavirus, which is a part of the Togaviridae family.
The symptoms of chikungunya typically develop 2 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, rash, fatigue, and swelling of the joints. The joint pain associated with chikungunya infection can be debilitating and may persist for weeks or months, leading to prolonged discomfort and impaired mobility.
While chikungunya is rarely fatal, it can cause significant morbidity and impact the quality of life of affected individuals. There is no specific antiviral treatment for chikungunya, so management mainly focuses on relieving the symptoms. Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medications, and plenty of rest are usually recommended.
